Getting Your Dog To Beg
‘Begging’ is one of the more advanced tricks out there that can be hard to master. Depending on your dog, and how easily it responds to training, you could find that this trick takes weeks or months to perfect, but when it is finally perfected, boy is it something worth showing off to your envious friends!
Essentially, begging entails trying to get your dog to stand up on its hind legs and ‘begging’. Be warned that with large dogs, having them stand on their hind legs can be a tough thing to pull off, and more often than not you’ll end up having to support them.
To accomplish this, you’re going to need to get ahold of a couple of treats first to be used as rewards. Hold one of these treats out above your dogs head, and raise the treat as your dog tries to reach for it. Keep raising, until your dog is forced to go onto his hind legs to reach high enough and grab the treat. Say ‘beg’ while you do this, and give him the treat. Don’t let the dog grab it out of your hands, as this would be a bad habit to foster.
Keep repeating this method, but each time hold the position a little longer before you give the treat to your dog. By doing so, you’re going to get them to associate the idea of standing with the word ‘beg’, and that’s exactly what you want to encourage. Also, you want to encourage them to hold the standing position longer and really ‘beg’ for it!
After a few weeks of doing this, you will find that your dog should show considerable progress. Don’t give up or slacken off, and eventually you’ll have a great beggar dog!
