Teach Your Dog How To Shake Hands
Dog tricks are really fun things to teach your dog and then show off to your friends, and of all the tricks around – none is funnier than teaching your dog to shake hands. Although this is definitely one of the slightly more advanced tricks around, the truth is that it is amazingly easy to train your dog to do this!
All you’re going to need are some treats to reward your dog with, and a really cool command phrase. After all, saying ‘shake’ and getting your dog to shake your hand is so mundane. Why not try something like ‘put it there’, or ‘paws up!’. Anything you like really – and if you really want to use ‘shake’ that’s fine too.
Anyway, what you need to do is basically say your command phrase, then scoop up your dogs paw in your hand and hold it for a few seconds. After that, reward the dog while the paw is still in your hand with a treat. By doing so, you’re going to start to establish the pattern that you desire.
Following attempts should follow the same mold, but each time wait a little longer before you scoop up the paw. What you’re trying to work at is to eventually get to the point where by just saying the command phrase, and pointing at the paw, your dog will lift up its paw out of its own volition and put it in your hand.
See, that wasn’t too complicated right? It would be a good idea to repeat the same thing for the other paw too. Don’t expect your dog to learn this trick overnight – it can, and will, take time. Go about things gradually, and sooner or later you’ll find that your dog shakes your hand on command!
